Sergio Trujillo

Internationally Acclaimed Director & Choreographer

Sergio Trujillo is an internationally renowned theater director and choreographer, and the first-ever Latino recipient of the Tony Award for Best Choreography, which he received in 2019 for Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. His work has electrified stages across Broadway, the West End, and around the world, bringing bold storytelling and dynamic movement to life with signature heart, style, and precision.

He is also the recipient of the Olivier Award for Memphis (2015), and has been recognized with numerous nominations, including a Tony nomination for On Your Feet!, multiple Drama Desk nominations (Jersey Boys, Memphis, Leap of Faith, Hands on a Hardbody), a Lucille Lortel nomination for Saved, and an Ovation Award for Empire. He is the proud recipient of three NAACP Awards.

Sergio made his Broadway choreographic debut with All Shook Up in 2005, soon after creating the international hit Jersey Boys.

At one point, four of his productions—Next to Normal (Pulitzer Award Winner), The Addams Family, Memphis (Olivier Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, NAACP Award, Drama Desk Award nomination, Astaire Award nomination), and Jersey Boys (Greenroom Award, Olivier Award nomination, Drama Desk Award nomination, Dora Award nomination, Outer Critics Circle Award nomination)—were running simultaneously on Broadway, a rare feat that highlighted his extraordinary range and influence.

His Broadway choreography credits also include Summer: The Donna Summer Musical (Chita Rivera Award, NAACP nomination), A Bronx Tale (Chita Rivera Award nomination), Guys and Dolls (Astaire Award nomination), and Days of Wine and Roses.

As a director, his recent credits include Real Women Have Curves – The Musical (Broadway), The Harder They Come at The Public Theater, Arrabal at American Repertory Theater (Elliot Norton Award for Best Direction), Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour, ¡Viva Broadway! Hear Our Voices (digital concert), Flashdance: The Musical (North American Tour), and the Broadway concert of Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine.

He is a two-time Emmy Award nominee for Christmas in Rockefeller Center and Annie Live! (NBC), and choreographed the 2021 and 2024 Tony Awards, The Kennedy Center Honors, and multiple performances for the Tony Awards broadcast. Sergio also served as choreographer for the Movie Musical Kiss of The Spiderwoman starring Jennifer Lopez and Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys film.

In 2017, Sergio co-founded Truworthy Productions with producing partner, Jack Noseworthy, with a mission to develop Latin musicals that spotlight Hispanic culture in America. Upcoming works include Casa de las Flores (inspired by the hit Netflix series by Manolo Caro, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by Bob Martin), and Like Water for Chocolate, based on the beloved novel by Laura Esquivel, with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and collaboration from Latin Grammy winners La Santa Cecilia.

Off-Broadway, Sergio has contributed to Invisible Thread (Second Stage), Romeo & Juliet (Shakespeare in the Park), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Kismet (City Center Encores!), and Bare: A Pop Opera.

Internationally, his impact is immense: Disney’s Tarzan continues a 15+ year run in Europe; Jersey Boys plays worldwide; The Addams Family found homes in Latin America; and Memphis was filmed for theatrical release and streamed on Netflix. His work has graced the West End (Peggy Sue Got Married), Tokyo (Twelfth Night, Kiss Me Kate), Canada’s Stratford Festival (West Side Story, The Sound Of Music), and beyond.

He has created original works for major regional theaters and companies, including Freaky Friday (Disney), Kiss of the Spider Woman (US Tour), Carmen: An Afro-Cuban Musical (Helen Hayes nomination), The Wedding Banquet (Village Theatre), and Chita and All That Jazz, where he co-choreographed alongside the legendary Chita Rivera.

Sergio resides in New York City and is proud to be the first choreographer invited to serve as a voting member of the American Theatre Wing’s Advisory Committee for the Tony Awards. He serves on the advisory boards of Ballet Hispánico, R.Evolución Latina, and New York Theatre Barn, and is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

Born in Colombia and raised in Toronto, Sergio originally studied science at the University of Toronto before discovering his passion for performance and movement. He was honored by President Juan Manuel Santos as one of the Top 100 Colombians in the world, and has been named three times among Forbes Magazine’s Top 50 Creative Colombian Artists.

Since 1990, he has shared his life with his husband, actor Jack Noseworthy. They married in 2011 and joyfully welcomed their son in March 2018.
